Saint Barbara was the daughter of a tyrannical father, who kept her locked up in a tower. She devoted her solitude to prayer and study. She secretly was baptized by a Priest. When her father, Dioscorus, became aware of his daughters conversion, he had her tortured, and beheaded. As she was dying, a flash of lightning struck down on Dioscorus, to his death.
She is invoked during thunderstorms, and is the patron saint of artillerymen, and miners.
Her feast day is December 4th.
